BSc Accounting and Economics is an undergraduate degree programme designed for students with or without prior academic experience of the subject.

BSc Accounting and Economics focuses on the broad areas of accounting and economics. It is differentiated from the BA Accounting and Economics by its greater mathematical and statistical content.

You will develop a detailed knowledge, critical understanding and range of technical application skills relating to the key business function of accounting and its three core areas of financial reporting, management accounting and financial management. This is complimented by a focus on the progressive study of the core theory of micro and macro economics and the development of strong technical skills. 

A one-year paid work placement during year 3 provides you with an outstanding opportunity to further develop and apply your knowledge and skills whilst embedded within a successful organisation. This experience is designed enhance your CV and provide you with a distinctive edge when entering the highly competitive graduate job market. In some cases a successful placement may lead to the offer of a permanent role within the same organisation upon graduation.

  • Introductory financial accounting
  • Introductory maths techniques
  • Introductory quantitative techniques
  • Principles of macroeconomics
  • Principles of microeconomics

  • Assurance, governance and ethics
  • General introduction to law and Introduction to business law
  • Introduction to business
  • Markets, marketing and strategy
Year 2
  • Business finance
  • Corporate financial reporting
  • Economic analysis
  • Management accounting
  • Mathematics for econometrics
  • Mathematics for economists
Year 3
  • Paid work placement (1-year, full-time)
    Students who have completed two years of study and for whom a work placement is unsuitable, can progress directly into the third (final) year of study, converting this into a 3-year degree programme.
Year 4
  • Economic theory or Introductory econometrics

At least two of:

  • Advanced business finance
  • Advanced financial reporting
  • Advanced management accounting
  • + up to 3 optional modules

Professional accreditation and career prospects

Graduates of BSc Accounting and Economics can apply for exemptions and/or credit for prior learning from the professional accounting bodies. You will graduate with knowledge and professional skills, and a heighted sense of commercial awareness that will be immediately transferable in a business environment. 

BSc Accounting and Economics can provide a route into many areas, in both the private and public sectors, including accountancy, banking and finance, marketing, human resources, consultancy and general management. Example graduate roles include marketing executive, trainee chartered accountant, financial analyst, HR officer and management trainee.
